Easy Hot Cheeto Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

These Hot Cheeto mozzarella sticks are crunchy, spicy, and stuffed with gooey melty cheese. Wait until you dip them in the hot honey.

I love regular mozzarella sticks, but these Hot Cheeto cheese sticks are on another level.

The coating is super crunchy and way more flavor than regular breadcrumbs. The cheese pull doesn’t disappoint, either.

Then you’ve got the hot honey that brings everything together with its sweet heat and thick sticky texture.

You’d think these would be complicated, but they’re honestly super easy to make. The hardest part is waiting for them to chill.

I already know I’m gonna crave these again tomorrow.

Why You’ll Love These Hot Cheeto Cheese Sticks

  • Crunchy and gooey: The contrast between the crunchy spicy coating and the gooey melted cheese is addictive.
  • Packed with flavor: The crushed Hot Cheetos create way more flavor than regular breadcrumbs.
  • Crispy without deep frying: Shallow frying gives them that crispy fried texture without needing a whole pot of oil.
  • Sweet and spicy combo: The hot honey adds sweetness that balances the heat really well.
  • Make-ahead friendly: You can prep them ahead of time and fry straight from frozen.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Mozzarella cheese: Use a block of mozzarella and cut it into thick sticks so each one gets extra melty in the center.
  • Flamin’ Hot Cheetos: Crush them finely so they stick well and create that spicy, crunchy coating.
  • Flour: This helps the egg stick to the cheese and gives the coating a better base.
  • Salt, garlic powder, and paprika: These season the flour so the mozzarella sticks have flavor in every layer.
  • Eggs: The eggs help the crushed Hot Cheetos stick to the mozzarella.
  • Oil: Use a neutral frying oil for shallow frying, like vegetable, canola, or avocado oil.

How to Make Hot Cheeto Mozzarella Sticks

1. Slice the mozzarella cheese.

Cut the block of mozzarella cheese into 8-12 thick sticks.

2. Crush the Hot Cheetos.

Add the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos to a food processor or blender and pulse until finely crushed. You can also place them in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.

3. Prepare the breading stations.

Three breading stations with seasoned flour, beaten eggs, and crushed Hot Cheetos for mozzarella sticks.

Add the crushed Hot Cheetos to a shallow bowl. In another shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and paprika. Beat the eggs in a third shallow bowl.

4. Double-coat the mozzarella sticks.

Dip each mozzarella stick into the seasoned flour, then the eggs, then the crushed Hot Cheetos. Dip them back into the eggs and Hot Cheetos one more time for a thicker coating.

5. Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks.

Place them on a tray or plate and freeze for 30 minutes.

6. Make the hot honey.

While the mozzarella sticks chill, stir together the honey and hot chili oil in a small bowl until combined.

7. Shallow fry until crispy.

Tips for Crispy Spicy Mozzarella Sticks

  • Freeze before frying: Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks to prevent the cheese from melting too quickly and leaking out while frying.
  • Crush the Hot Cheetos finely: Smaller crumbs stick better and create a more even crispy coating.
  • Double coat the mozzarella sticks: The second layer of egg and Hot Cheetos helps create a thicker, crunchier crust.
  • Fry in batches: Overcrowding the pan lowers the oil temperature and can make the coating soggy instead of crispy.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Takis: Use crushed Takis instead of Hot Cheetos for a sharper lime-chili flavor and extra crunch.
  • String Cheese: String cheese works too, but I personally like block mozzarella better because you can cut the sticks thicker.
  • Extra Spicy: Add cayenne pepper or chili powder to the flour mixture if you want the coating even spicier.
  • Flamin’ Hot Doritos: Crushed Flamin’ Hot Doritos give the mozzarella sticks a slightly cheesier flavor with a different texture.
  • Deep Frying: You can deep fry instead of shallow fry if preferred. They will crisp up a little faster and more evenly.

Dipping Sauces for Spicy Mozzarella Sticks

  • Hot honey: Sweet, spicy, sticky, and goes wonderfully with the crunchy Hot Cheetos coating. The chili oil adds heat while the honey balances everything out.
  • Ranch dressing: Creamy dips work especially well with the spicy coating. Cool creamy ranch balances the spicy Hot Cheetos coating perfectly.
  • Blue cheese dressing: Tangy, creamy, and perfect if you like buffalo-style flavors. The sharpness cuts through the richness really well.
  • Jalapeño ranch: Basically ranch with extra heat. It adds another spicy layer without overpowering the cheese.
  • Queso dip: Extra cheese on cheese is never a bad idea.

How to Store and Make Ahead

To Store: Let the mozzarella sticks cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to a week.

To Reheat: Reheat in an air fryer or oven at 375°F until hot and crispy again, about 4 to 6 minutes. I don’t recommend microwaving – the coating gets soft really fast.

To Make-Ahead: Arrange the breaded mozzarella sticks on a tray and freeze until solid. Transfer them to a freezer-safe bag, squeeze out as much air as possible, and freeze for up to 2 months. Fry straight from frozen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bake Hot Cheetos mozzarella sticks?

You can, but I personally think frying gives the best texture. The coating gets crispier and the cheese melts way better.

To bake them, place the frozen mozzarella sticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spray generously with oil, and bake at 425°F for about 8 to 10 minutes.

Can I air fry Hot Cheetos mozzarella sticks?

Yes! Air fry the frozen mozzarella sticks at 390°F for about 5 to 7 minutes or until crispy. Keep an eye on them because once the cheese starts melting, they can burst pretty quickly.

Can I make spicy mozzarella sticks ahead of time?

Yes, and I actually recommend it. Bread the mozzarella sticks ahead of time, place them in a freezer-safe bag, squeeze out as much air as possible, and keep them frozen until ready to fry. That way you can fry them straight from the freezer whenever the craving hits.
